Finished this a while back, actually... used it for a 'Design an Organism' assignment where I went insanely overboard and managed to pull up my bio lab grade with extra credit. xP My TA liked drawings...
Also wrote down a bit more about sayriths for the report, so have some info. I had to remove most signs of anthropomorphism from it, so it's rather dry and partially incorrect.
MSPaint, if you couldn't tell. B a s i c _ I n f o r m a t i o n Similar in body shape to some forms of fictional dragons, sayriths are a pseudo-marsupial mammal who live in the far reaches of cold mountaintops. They spend a significant portion of their livesairborne, but very rarely through their own propulsion. Because of their large and heavy bodies, a majority of their flight time is spent in gliding. To take off, they usually find a cliff or other ledge and jump off, similar to very large birds.
As a species, they are very claustrophobic, and very much prefer the open rock and snow of their mountains to any forest or cave setting. Because of this, most of their dens, which are required in the sub-zero temperatures of their mountain habitat, are nothing more than shallow, sheltered dents in the mountainside. No deep, burrowing structure has ever been found to be used by the species, despite the obvious positive benefits such a den could provide.
P h y s i c a l _ F e a t u r e s There is a very high level of sexual dimorphism in this species. Females are significantly more bulky than males, contrary to most mammalian species. This is probably due to their role in pup-bearing and care. (see below) A female wing and body as a whole is more broad and heavyset, while males are much more slender and showy. From a quantitative viewpoint, females are 4-5 tall at the head, with body length (including short tail,) of about 7-8. Males, in contrast, are often 5-6 tall, and have a significantly longer tail. They often reach 11-13 in length, but almost always weigh less, and carry significantly less body fat.
This weight and size difference leads to a discrepancy in time spent aloft between the genders. Females spend a significantly longer time on the ground, and as a result have a different diet. However, as far as diet goes, sayriths are quite firm omnivores. They have teeth similar to a bear- large canines, but also coupled with a decent set of grinding molars. Males, who spend more of their time aloft, seem to have a more protein, animal-rich diet. Females, who spend more time on the ground, often have a significant portion of their diet supplied by berries and fruits.
This makes sense, as sayriths typically hunt from the air, surprising other mountain-going creatures with near-silent, deadly aerial swoops.
One crucial difference not yet mentioned is the disparity in coloration between males and female sayriths. While females are colored in no-frill brown, black and white patterns, males span almost every color of the rainbow, and have markings of all kinds, from stripes to spots to rosettes. Coloration also determines where a male sits in clan hierarchy. Since sayriths exist in very large groups of 200+ individuals spread around significant landmass, a strong dominance structure is necessary to insure peace.
In addition to the bright colors and slender body, males also have very exaggerated leg feathering, ear tufts and a length of fur on their tail that is used for extra warmth. This lends to their image of delicacy, and has no purpose barring mating displays"
